FAQ

How is REAF different from Focusing?

In Focusing, you will express your Felt Sense through words and body language, such as natural gestures.

In the Receptive-Expressive Arts Focusing (REAF) program, you can explore your Felt Sense beyond words. You will access your Felt Sense by contemplating Museum Art (physical, virtual, or imagined) and expressing yourself through various studio art activities, such as painting, drawing, sculpting, writing, moving, dancing, and exploring sound and rhythm. These activities may not occur all at once. Sometimes, only one artistic modality is used, such as the visual arts. At other times, several studio art activities will interplay (expressive arts). The type of artistic modality used depends on your personal, sensory-based method of self-actualization, reflected in language

The emphasis is on deliberate viewing ("slow looking") and art-making, regardless of the number and kind of modalities involved

I have no art experience. Can I participate?

The user-friendly exercises of Museum-Art Based Receptive-Expressive Arts Focusing (MA-REAF) are designed for those with little or no experience. You don't need any previous knowledge or art skills

I am not really a creative person. But can I benefit?

There are many ways to express your Felt Sense through therapeutic arts. One form is visual such as painting, drawing or sculpturing. Other forms include writing, movement, dance, and sound exploration. The form of expression that is most natural for you will come easily as your Felt Sense will induce a creative flow from your body's innate creativity. Simply by doing and listening to your body's creative voice, you will benefit

What art materials do I need?

The art supplies you need for MA-REAF activities are simple and inexpensive. You will need oil pastels (colored pencils or markers will work as well), watercolors, paper, and tape. Other materials, such as modeling clay, are welcome additions!

You will receive a materials list and instructions on how to transform your desk into an art table with enrollment
